Nigerian Government Acquires N10bn Gadgets to fight Terrorism
Federal Government yesterday said it is set to acquire multi-billion-naira state of the art security equipment to tackle terrorism and other vices.
The equipment is designed to help government provide gadgets to battle emerging security challenges.
The gadgets which will cost the government about N10bn are expected to serve the Army, Air Force, Navy, the State Security Services (SSS), the Police, office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and other arms of the security services.
The project, which is coming under the National Public Security Communication System, is fashioned along the line of the Global System of Telecommunications (GSM).
The telecom gadgets are also to ensure that government is not caught napping by activities of Boko Haram and other anti-state group
Meanwhile, government has ordered 24 hours surveillance of all hotels that have over 50 rooms capacity in the country while all public infrastructure and private recreational centres are now to be manned by plain clothes security operatives.
NSA, Gen. Andrew Azazi (rtd), ordered this following the security alert issued by the United States (US) government to its citizens to steer clear of some prominent hotels in Abuja. The advisory has since been varied by the American government.
Federal Government, it was also gathered, has began discussing with neighbouring countries on the need for cooperation in dealing with the emerging security challenges in border towns and cities within the West African sub-region.
The security equipment which will be principally coordinated by the office of the NSA, has installed line capacity exceeding MTN and Globacom combined.
Azazi, on the directive of President Jonathan, further ordered Ministries, Agencies and Departments (MDAs) of government to volunteer capable personnel to be trained by his office on counter terrorism and emergency response strategies to manage related security issues in the respective MDAs to complement the efforts of key security agencies in the country.
It was also gathered from a reliable source that, the new security equipment is to complement the already existing tracking device put into operation few months ago by the police as well as the over 2000 units of Close Circuit Televisions (CCTV) that have been installed in Abuja and Lagos and the Aerial Unmanned Vehicles (AUVs) which are also expected to be deplored in the nation’s borders.
A reliable Presidency source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the decision to go public with what government has been doing behind the scene to secure lives and property was to boost the public confidence. It was gathered that the different security agencies under the office of the NSA have intensified physical security checks across the FCT and major cities in the country as well as deployment of intelligence personnel to busy hotels and offices nationwide.
“We are doing our best to ensure that we protect the lives and property of the citizenry and foreigners in this country. Once the entire new security apparatus is put into use, you can be sure that these criminals causing so much trouble for the government will be taken care of adequately”, the source said.
While calling on Nigerians to ensure that the war on terrorism is not left for the government alone to handle, the source appealed, “the fight on terrorism should be a collective one because the man or woman who has turned himself or herself into a weapon of destruction is difficult to monitor, so every Nigerian should consider this fight his or her own. It must not be left for the government to fight alone”.

Boko Haram: Tight Security at Police HQ
Barely one week after about 100 people lost their lives in the blasts suspected to have been perpetrated by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram in Damaturu, Yobe State and Borno State, federal government establishments, including the Force Headquarters in Abuja were yesterday tightly secured by security operatives.
The heavily armed security personnel were seen diverting all vehicles away from the Force Headquarters and other key building in the Federal Capital Territory.
THISDAY checks revealed that some Boko Haram members had on Thursday night sent a warning letter to the Police, threatening to bomb the Force Headquarters, as well as federal government establishments in Abuja and its environs. Security operatives in large number, especially Anti-Bomb Squad team were seen all over key offices and government establishment in Abuja, diverting all vehicles from the front of the buildings as far as two kilometres away from such buildings.
Also vehicles were not allowed to park near the buildings, while workers and visitors to the buildings were subjected to intense screening before being allowed in.
When THISDAY visited some of the establishments, it was like the proverbial camel passing through the eye of a needle. At a point, the security checks at the entrance to most of the buildings became unbearable.
Boko Haram: Troops patrol Jos as fear grips police, residents
Fear has gripped all the 985 Assistant Superintendents of Police, ASPs now on promotion course at the Police Staff College, PSC, Jos, Plateau State, following security reports of possible attack on them by members of the fundamentalist Boko Haram.
No fewer that three patrol teams made up of members of the Police Mobile Force, MOPOL, were deployed around the college Thursday night as reports said that some of their Muslim colleagues were alerted during their evening prayers in the mosque over the possible attack.
Security sources told Saturday Vanguard that activities were paralyzed in the college when a text message was read to the course participants alerting them about the possible Boko Haram attack at a time when most of their Muslim colleagues had tactfully disappeared from their hostels after taking few of their important belongings with them.
A police official message number CE.6421/’’E’’DEPT/ABJ/Vol.T/49 of August 22, 2011, designed an eight- weeks course for the ASPs from September 26, 2011 to November 18, 2011, but the course was suddenly extended to nine weeks, without explanations.
The course tagged ‘’ASP-DSP promotion 2/2011,’’ has in majority, southerners who underwent an 18 months course between January 2003 and April 2004 and have remained ASPs for eight years until now. A similar course ran early this year lasted for only six weeks because of the special security situation in the state.
Following the security alert, majority of the officers who are southerners reportedly smelt a rat, thinking that some fifth columnists must have been working to use Boko Haram to reduce their chances in the Police Force.
Although, the area was generally quiet Thursday night, some of the course participants were alleged to have slept in the bush to avoid being bombed.
The sorces said, ‘’Fear has paralysed activities at PSC, Jabags and left.
’’It is their thinking that the extension of a six weeks course to nine weeks given the security situation in Jos was not unconnected with the Boko Haram attack to reduce the chances of southerners in the force.’’
Relatedly, a course participant, ASP Adewale Lukman from the Ekiti State Police Command was said to have slumped and died while entering the hall for his mid-course examinations due to what his colleagues described as harsh and unhygienic conditions in the institution.
Sources said that his fellow trainees raised over N300,000 to hire ambulance and a bus that took home, the remains of their fallen colleague to Ekiti amid lamentations that Lukman could have survived if the PSC had good medical facilities.
At the time of filing this report, the school which is the highest police training institution in the country has not had electricity supply for over a week even as the final examination is few weeks away.
According to reliable police sources, the course participants depend on well water, just as most halls are un-inhabitable with burst waste pipes and suck-away pits.
’’Officers jump over faeces in and out of their hostels. A room meant for one officer now contains four officers each and are devoid of fresh air, due to the stinking smell of faeces from the burst pipes.
’’The Commandant of the College, Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Chris Ola Ola, is in sympathy with the course participants but can do little or nothing to ameliorate their sufferings or humiliations in the name of course,’’ the sources further added.
However, the Special Task Force, STF, in charge of security in the state has dispelled rumours of possible attack by Boko Haram in Jos as the spokesman, Captain Charles Ekeocha said in a statement that there was no cause for alarm.
Ekeocha said: “The attention of the Special Task Force (Operation Safe Haven) has been drawn to the rumour going around town of an impending outbreak of violence in Jos metropolis yesterday. The STF wants to use this medium to re-assure the people of the state that the security of lives and property is in no way threatened and that people should go about their normal activities without fear of molestation as the Special Task Force with other security agencies in the state are well on top of the situation in the state”
It was said that the rumour of attack became rife on Thursday following a demonstration by some youngsters who marched through some major streets brandishing dangerous weapons, fueling speculations that it was a prelude to an attack by members of the Boko Haram sect on the state capital.
Intensified patrol of major streets and entry points to the state was observed from Thursday night to Friday morning in an apparent move to nip any planned attack in the bud.
Some residents also took preventive measures by not allowing their children to go to school yesterday, while some businesses did not open until later in the day.
It was speculated that those behind the planned attack wanted it to coincide with the return of Governor Jonah Jang who had been abroad on vacation for about four weeks even as it was further alleged that the unruly behavior of the youngsters aged between 10 and 15 years was a provocative act designed to cause violence.
STF warned trouble makers that the full weight of the law would be brought upon them as they would not be allowed to truncate the peace process in the state.

N15m share scam: Nollywood star, Jim Iyke docked
ABUJA – Popular Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, was on Friday, docked before a Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja following allegation that he duped a company to the tune of N15 million.
He was charged with criminal breach of trust, criminal force, assault, cheating and criminal misappropriation contrary to sections 312,265,322 397 and 309 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, the actor who mounted the dock yesterday, pleaded not guilty to a one count criminal charge that was preferred against him by the Nigeria Police Force.
Specifically, Police alleged that he used fraudulent tactics and acquired 15 per cent equity shares of a music company, Untamed Records Ltd.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr Chijoke Okezie, told the court that investigation into the case revealed that the accused, a resident of Sunnyville Estate, Abuja, hoodwinked one Habiba Abubakar into granting him access to share documents of the recording company.
He said police was invited into the case after Abubakar who is the manager of the company, discovered that 15 per cent of its equity shares was transferred to Jim Iyke.
Consequently, Abubakar wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IG) on August 8, urging him to investigate the fraud.
Okezie said the accused admitted that the complainant paid the money into his Oceanic Bank account No. 00500173691, deviating from his initial plan of investment and converted the money to his personal use.
He added that when the complainant confronted the accused, he allegedly turned violent, threatening to kill her.
Nevertheless, immediately the actor entered his plea yesterday, his counsel, Esther Uzoma, relied on the provision of section 341(2) of the Criminal Procedural Code, and sought his release on bail.
His lawyer pleaded the court to grant him bail on self-recognition, vouching that he will be available to conclude his trial.
Though the prosecuting counsel objected to the request, however, Chief Magistrate Okeagu Azubike, acceded to the oral application, and granted him bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
The Magistrate stressed that the sureties must be responsible Nigerians who must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
He further adjourned the matter till December 9 to enable the police to complete their investigations.
Nollywood star, Jim Iyke docked
He said police was invited into the case after Abubakar who is the manager of the company, discovered that 15 per cent of its equity shares was transferred to Jim Iyke.
Consequently, Abubakar wrote a petition to the Inspector General of Police (IG) on August 8, urging him to investigate the fraud.

FG urged to restore confidence in governance
A UNITED States based Professor and founder, Josephson Institute on Ethics, Prof Michael Josephson , has lamented that the greatest challenge facing Nigeria is lack of trust in leadership, noting that Federal Government must fight to restore confidence in governance.
He also said that corruption strives where people lack citizenship, saying that the first principle of effective transformation of any nation is good character and value re-orientation.
Josephson said this at a lecture convened by Bridge to Goodness Project in partnership with the office of the President on Values and Ethics and Josephson Institute on Ethics, USA in Lagos.
The lecture titled : Strategies for national Transformation : Through Value and ethical culture was conceived on the conviction to make Nigerians the most important and most valuable asset of the nation.
Josephson who commended the organizers of the lecture for their foresight, described the occasion as a good step for Nigeria to make a quantum push to greater height.
Similarly a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia, noted that the issue of value and ethical reorientation that will lead to transforming the country, is not the responsibility of the government alone, but that of every Nigerian.
According to him, the issue of nation building is not just about building infrastructure, but also about self examination patriotism and love for one another.
‘’If every individual should improve on his character, the country will be transformed. We all need to clear our environment and make ourselves better and help our neighbours to make Nigeria a better place,’’ said Ajumogobia

Actor Ayo Badmus badly beaten by political thugs
The actor tells Vanguard exactly what happened to him on that unfortunate day during the Sallah holidays.
It’s true that I was beaten and almost killed by the thugs guarding the Chairman of Oshodi L.G.A. My wife, my brother and myself went to pay a courtesy to my boss, Tunde Kelani on the Salah day. When we got there, I went round to greet people and when I got to where the Oshodi L.G.A Chairman sat, I wanted to shake him when his brother said I ought to have prostrated.I didn’t reply him even when he started insulting me, saying actors are stupid and useless. I made to leave when suddenly, I saw a group of thugs, numbering up to twenty pounced on me and started beating me up.

Atiku rallies supports for Nyako
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has directed his supporters across all the political parties in Adamawa State to support the candidature of Governor Murtala Nyako in the January 14, 2012 governorship election in the state.
He also directed that the Labour Party, LP, which he formed and nurtured, should be collapsed into the existing structures in the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, in the state.
Atiku gave the directive in Yola while addressing the executive and members of LP when they paid him a courtesy visit late Tuesday evening.
He said the collapse of LP in support of the ruling PDP was the end of opposition in Adamawa.
Describing the development as healthy, Atiku said it would pave way for a more formidable and united PDP.
“Opposition is dead because the people that matter in Adamawa politics have re-united for the sake of our party’s growth” Atiku added.
According to him, most of felt aggrieved and left the PDP had no option then than to form the LP to pursue their various aspirations.
’’Those that left the PDP and formed the LP were founding fathers of the Adamawa PDP. They have decided to return to the PDP fold in order to rebuild the once vibrant house they left in protest” he further said, expressing happiness that his clarion call on such aggrieved founding fathers was yielding positive results.
’’I have been communicating and appealing to all aggrieved PDP members who left the party for obvious reasons to forget the past and return to the party in order to give full support to Governor Nyako’s return bid.
’’What we are seeing today is a good development. Those that are returning to the PDP from LP are coming with good intentions which I believe will not only bring unity of purpose, progress and intra- party discipline, not only to the PDP but to the people of Adamawa state . ” Atiku also noted.
He recollected that Governor Nyako had good intentions for people of the state and was doing well when he started before ‘’his attention was diverted at a point due to the nagging intra party crisis that rocked the party in recent past.
’’If majority of the people of Adamawa state are benefitting from the Nyako- led administration, I see no reason why we should not join hands to give him the much needed encouragement and support to forge ahead instead of ganging up to pull him down.”
Earlier, Chairman of the LP in the state, Medan Teneke said their decision to collapse the party and return to the PDP was informed by Atiku’s plea that all aggrieved founding members should return with the sole aim of working for the re-election of Governor Nyako.
“We left to form the LP because we felt aggrieved with the way things were managed in the PDP then; in politics there is no permanent enemy but permanent interest. Now we are back to rebuild the PDP, and this is good. Like the former Vice President said, with us back into the PDP, opposition is dead in Adamawa state” Teneke submitted.

Sallah In A Time Of Fear
For anyone who grew up in Northern Nigeria, the Eid-el-Adha/Eid-el-Kabir festival commonly referred to as “Babban Sallah” evokes images of wearing brand new clothes, preparation of hearty meals shared with neighbours (Muslims and Christians alike), exchange of visits between family and friends, going to gardens or parks, and most importantly, the symbolic slaughter of a ram to celebrate and commemorate the near sacrifice by Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) of his son, an event similarly recognized by Christians and Jews as well.
This year however, things turned out to be quite different for Nigerians for as many prepared for the Eid amidst rising prices of basic commodities such as food stuff and transportation fares and as people travelled to their hometowns with their various families, they were met with sad and frightening news of the utterly despicable and violent attacks unleashed by Boko Haram in the two north eastern cities of Maiduguri and Damaturu. The series of (suicide) bomb blasts and gun battles were targeted at Police Stations, Joint Military Task Force (JTF) Headquarters, 6 Churches, a mosque and even a bank. By Sunday, casualty and death toll had climbed to over 150, according to the Red Cross and other official sources.
To say that the country is under siege by Boko Haram would not be farfetched. Bombs and violent assassinations have been going on through-out the year. The fact that Boko Haram seems to be growing stronger and more daring with each passing day is simply a reflection of government’s utter inability and incapacity to restore order and protect innocent citizens. The fact that Boko Haram unleashed this mayhem on the eve of the Islamic festival and celebration robs them of any religious or moral undertone, for Islam clearly does not preach murder and bloodshed. It has reached a time when Nigerians, especially those living in the North are slowly coming to grips with the stark reality that peace and basic freedom which were taken for granted, and every aspect of normal daily life is suddenly being fundamentally altered. The way the Eid celebration activities were almost grinded to a halt in Maiduguri and Damaturu as residents were forced to stay indoors in fear, is a clear indication of dark clouds looming in the horizon.
It also appears Boko Haram is revelling in this attention it is getting from the naked fear it has driven into people’s hearts. Shortly after it claimed responsibility for the carnage in Damaturu and Maiduguri, it’s spokesperson, Abul-Qaqa stated that more violent attacks should be expected, while the US and even Canadian embassies have issued statements warning their citizens of impending attacks in three major luxury hotels in the FCT, Abuja.
You have to wonder what Boko Haram actually intends to achieve with this bloodbath onslaught. Would its unreasonable desire for complete Islamization of Nigeria be attained by senseless bloodletting of innocent Nigerians? Or is there a larger political objective, even though no “Abuja” politician has so far been a victim except ordinary, common Nigerians – Muslims, Christians, moderate Islamic clerics and occasionally one or two Maiduguri politicians? So what exactly do they want? This is a question whose answers seem unclear to the vast majority of Nigerians, the authorities inclusive.
As if Nigerians do not have enough to deal with – the bombings, the fear, the incompetence of the security apparatuses to safeguard lives and property– more is added to the list of problems by subtle propaganda and allegations that Boko Haram is sponsored by politicians from the North, the “sore losers” of the last general elections, hell-bent on destabilizing President Goodluck Jonathan’s government. What started as an online rumour and unfounded assertion has made its way to mainstream media circles with even hitherto respected national figures regurgitating such baseless allegations. The absurd claims specifically state that some Northerners are simply fulfilling their promise of making Nigeria “ungovernable” if they did not win the last general elections, due to a feeling that the Presidency is regarded as “the birth right” of the North. If you ask anyone making these false assertions to list one person who actually said this, or to give evidence of who said such, where and when, they are unable to do that.
This is clearly unfounded for despite the fact that Boko Haram is clearly being sponsored by powerful people — especially in the wake of the evolution of their tactics — from the use of motorcycles and scooters to the use of expensive SUVs and other exotic cars in their recent violent activities — to say that the group is acting at the behest of Northern politicians to undermine the government is absolutely outrageous. President Jonathan would not have won the elections without active support of northern politicians and elite, many of whom actively campaigned for him during the PDP primaries and the main elections proper. Even during the primaries, northern PDP delegates who happened to be in the majority could have supported Atiku Abubakar – a Northerner and Jonathan’s then rival – but instead, they overwhelmingly rooted for Jonathan. This notion of a grand conspiracy by northerners to destabilize Jonathan’s government is simply a divide and rule tactic, employed by the political elite as usual, as has been done times without number in the past, to divert the attention of Nigerians from the relevant issues. And it has proven to be highly effective every single time.
As Nigerians round-up the Eid-el-Adha, the festival of sacrifice, it is pertinent we remind ourselves of the ultimate sacrifices others have been forced to make with their lives in this country, the increasing state of helplessness of many more Nigerians regarding their basic personal security and to hope that government will wake up to its responsibility of safeguarding the fundamental right to life of all citizens. For with each violent attack by Boko Haram, the descent to complete breakdown of law and order seems to loom dangerously closer in the horizon.

A Nigerian Mr. Domingo I. Ezirike, working as a taxi driver in USA was recently shot over a 75 cent dispute according to police.
The US police said it has charged a 20-year-old Rashad Terrell Slye of Southeast with first-degree murder while armed for the shooting of Ezirike of Prince Georges County.
Police officers discovered 40-year-old Ezirike in the driver’s seat of his cab shortly before 4 a.m., sitting in the grass in the 4300 block of Ponds Street Northeast near Anacostia Avenue. Emergency medical personnel found no signs of life.
The medical examiner later determined that Ezirike was killed with a gunshot wound to the body, according to police documents.
One of the detectives who found Ezirike told homicide detectives that he had seen the man in his cab during a routine traffic stop less than half an hour before he was found shot, police documents state. He leaned into the cab to tell Ezirike to put on his seat belt, the detective said, and saw two passengers in the back seat.
Calls made from Slye’s cell phone led police to an address in the 1500 block of Anacostia Avenue. A witness there told police that when she got into the cab with Slye, the cabbie asked the two for $20 to drive them into D.C., which she gave him. She also remembered the police traffic stop.
At the final destination, she told police the driver asked for an additional $7.75. She gave him $5 and Slye $2, but the driver and Slye began arguing over the remaining 75 cents. She told police she got out of the cab and walked away, asking Slye to come with her, but he continued to argue with the cabbie. A witness at Ponds Street told police to have overheard a man in the cab saying loudly “Give me my $20 back,” then demanding to be led out of the cab. The witness told police a black man got out of the back seat with a silver handgun, telling the driver to get out of the car.
The driver got out and lay down on the ground, telling the gunman he didn’t have any money. The gunman, the witness said, went through the driver’s pockets, where he apparently found some money. The witness told police it seemed as if the suspect tried to shoot the driver once but the gun didn’t fire.
The driver took off his pants to prove that he didn’t have any money with him. The suspect told the driver to get back into the cab. He then fired one shot and ran off toward Anacostia Avenue, the witness said.
Ezirike, still alive, was able to reverse the car toward Anacostia Avenue. His cell phone showed a 911 call shortly before 3:30 a.m. Through GPS, the taxi company was able to determine that Ezirike picked up his last customer at the Morgan Boulevard Metro station in Landover.
The number used to order the cab was also used to call someone in the 1500 block of Anacostia Avenue. Police searched that address under a warrant and found the cell phone and a blue jacket the witness at Ponds Street had described. Ezirike’s wallet was found behind that building.
